What Happened?
If you’d told someone twenty years ago that Marietta, Georgia would one day be home to one of the most talked-about pizza scenes in the Southeast, they probably would’ve laughed into their sweet tea. But here we are — and Cobb County has quietly, deliciously earned its reputation as a destination for people who take their pizza seriously.
So what happened? How did a suburban stretch of northwest Atlanta become the kind of place where serious pizza lovers make the drive on purpose? Let’s dig in.
From Chain Country to Craft Pizza Capital
For years, Barrett Parkway and the corridors around Town Center Mall were synonymous with the usual suspects — the big chains, the familiar logos, the predictable slices. Nothing wrong with that, but it wasn’t exactly the kind of pizza that sparks a conversation.
That started to change as independent, chef-driven spots began planting their flags in Cobb County. Diners who’d been quietly driving into Atlanta or Decatur for a “real” pizza experience started realizing they didn’t have to go that far anymore. The suburbs had leveled up.
New Haven Apizza Comes to Marietta — Yes, Really
One of the most unexpected and exciting additions to the Cobb County pizza scene is Ah-Beetz New Haven Pizza, tucked into Barrett Creek Plaza at 125 Ernest W Barrett Pkwy NW, Suite A111. Founded by Nicholas Laudano, a New Haven, CT native, Ah-Beetz brings the real deal — authentic New Haven apizza (that’s “ah-beetz,” for the uninitiated) — to a community that had never tasted anything quite like it.
What makes it different? It starts with the oven. Ah-Beetz uses a state-of-the-art high-temp natural stone oven that fires pies at 750°F and above, producing the same signature char crust that made New Haven pizza famous. The result is a thin, crispy, beautifully blistered crust with a chew that the big chains simply cannot replicate. Add in their sauce family recipe, and top notch ingredients and you have what makes one of the best pizza styles in the world. Their motto says it best: No character without char.
The menu is a love letter to New Haven tradition — Mootz pizza, a legendary White Clam Pizza made with fresh littleneck clams, classic Margherita, and more. Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports gave the original Ah-Beetz location in Delray Beach, FL an 8.4 — one of the highest scores he’s awarded anywhere in the Southeast. That’s not a small deal.
Cobb County’s Pizza Scene Is Just Getting Started
The story isn’t over. If anything, the arrival of a true New Haven Pizza destination in Marietta signals that Cobb County diners are hungry for more — more craft, more character, more pizza worth talking about. Ah-Beetz joins the rank of other great Cobb County pizza joints, Solar Slice, Bottega, MTH Pizza, Antico’s, and Mister 01 to name a few. The best pizza in Georgia doesn’t just live in Atlanta anymore. Some of it is right here on Barrett Parkway, a few minutes from Town Center Mall.
